Those who stand in front of you, they are your mentors. Mentor and mentee is a prevalent concept in career and business world.

“A mentor is a person who has a professional and life experience and who voluntarily agrees to help a mentee develop skills, competencies, or goals.”

The first time I realized that the importance to maintain a mentor relationship is from a Monthly workshop held by Rosa and Sabina, two famous female entrepreneurs in Taiwan.

Backed then, a Thursday night in an ordinary campus speech. I met Milly, who is a journalist and graduate student at National Taiwan University. She shared with us her journey as a student teacher, how she figured out “being a teacher” is not her first choice in career path. I was so touched by her speech and almost burst into tears.

“You got nothing to lose at this age.”

“Don’t be afraid of no time to use, but be afraid of wasting your life.”

I sent out a message by Instagram, asking her out for consulting my messy thought and indecision as a undergraduate student.

That day was usual cloudy noon in Taipei city. We met in a Starbucks near her campus. I told her my experience, how I noticed that “being a teacher” is not my favorite. “ You are in the status where I used to be three years ago.” She just smiled and nodded.

The girls like us, who always feel out of tune with classmates in old-fashioned college, spending time to doubt and discontent in the current state.

I told her my plan to be an exchange student in Europe or the notion of entering into graduate school in the business-related field.

“There is no way to complete two tasks at the same time with high-quality.” Something must be sacrificed.

Most of her peers in the same department, still looking for a job, or a certification that proofing their achievement and effort. Milly finds her passion in journalism and reporting, at the same time, meeting her parents’ standard of “success”.

Don’t spend your time fulfilling others’ expectations.

It’s hard to say how much I appreciated these mentors in life. Every discussion I had, making me feel enlightened and refreshed. I’m still on the sail of pursuing a dream and life goals, and the target seems to be gradually vivid.
